Institutional Study Visit
Brussels, 2002 / ELSA Turku

E
LSA Turku organised an institutional study visit to the institutions of the European Union in September 2002. We visited the Parliament and the Commission, the law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom Llp & Affiliates and also the ELSA House. In the Parlament we were given a lecture about its history, activity and its position in the Union's decision making process. We visited the plenary hall and met the Finnish parliamentarians Heidi Hautala and Matti Wuoren.

At the Commission we attended a series of lectures held by experts of different topics; the role and activity of the Commission's legal unit, the drug legislation and the drug politics of the Union , the citizenship in the Union and the ratification of the EC law within the member states.

At the American law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom Llp & Affiliates we were told about its main activities as well as its role when dealing with problems within the EC law. We also discussed the lawyers' part of an international work environment.

When we visited the ELSA House, the International Board told us about their fields of responsibility and their current projects as well as ELSA's role in the United Nations.

The University of Turku financed this trip, since it was made a part of the "Basic Course on EC law" at the Turlu Law School.
