Moot Court Competition |
|
Wasa, April the 21st 2001 |
|
In April the 21st, ELSA Wasa arranged a Moot Court, which was the
first competition of its kind to be held in Vaasa. The competition took place in the court
of appeal, Vaasan hovioikeus, during our National Council Meeting-weekend (20-22.4.2001).
The aim of the competition was to offer all present ELSA-members an opportunity to be
"a lawyer in action" and in that way become more familiar with at least a part
of the legal profession. Unfortynately we had only two participating teams in the end
(ELSA Helsinki and ELSA Turku), but these were nevertheless very qualified. Since the
International Focus Programme of ELSA, or in other words, the specific theme on whichELSA
focus right now, was "Information Society - the Legal Challenges", we wanted our
Moot Court to in some way relate to that. Besides that, we wanted those taking part of the
competition to try a "hot" branch of law. We also strove to find a case with
basis in reality. The result was a case about computer crimes, that had been taken to both
the district court (Vaasan käräjäoikeus) and the court of appeal (Vaasan hovioikeus).
I'm pleased to say that the competition went really well. Thanks
to our two "judges" Robert Liljenfelt ja Kari-Matti Kauppila, both the audience
and the teams themselves found the Moot Court very instructive and amusing as well. The
Moot Court Competition ended with a guided tour in the building of the court of appeal.
Oh, and the winner was... ELSA Turku!
