Late Trias Sharovipteryx mirabilis

Late Triassic. Sharovipteryx mirabilis

Gouache 2001

Made on the basis of a skeletal reconstruction drawing by Peter Davis.
I had just seen a flock of various species of
Parus birds moving from tree to tree during their midvinter hunt for food. Maybe Sharovipteryx also move around in groups.

Late Triassic. Preondactylus buffarinii

The earliest known Pterodactyl.

Europasaurus holgeri

Late Jurassic. Europasaurus holgeri

2011 (rollover for detail)

The Pterosaur is a yet unnamed early Dsungaripterid. Most of the "reconstruction" of this pterosaur is very hypothetical.

Late Jurassic Archaeopteryx lithographica

Late Jurassic. Archaeopteryx lithographica
With possible flight assisting feathers on the legs.
Pencil 2008

The possibility that Archaeopteryx might have had these leg feathers was presented in 2006 by Nick Longrich.

Published in Vasabladet 26.10.2008 together with an article about the evolution of flight among birds and mammals.

Early Cretaceous Microraptor zhaoianus in a Gingko tree

Early Cretaceous. Microraptor zhaoianus in a Gingko tree
(anatomically incorrect legs on the flying/gliding one)
Gouache 2003

This painting was made for an article by Rolf Österblad and Vasabladet in 2003. Microraptor had just been described.
The earliest reconstructions got it all wrong with the legs and I went along and copied the mistake.

microraptor zhaoianus biplane

Early Cretaceous. Microraptor zhaoianus
"Biplane" configuration of legs during flight
Pencil 2008

Published in Vasabladet 26.10.2008 together with an article about the evolution of flight among birds and mammals.

2012 (rollover for detail)

Published in Vasabladet 16.6.2012 together with an article about Feathered dinosaurs and their colours.
"Risky" reconstruction due to the tightly folded wings and the sharply downwards bent tail.

Early Cretaceous Jeholodens jenkinsi and Sinosauropteryx prima

Early Cretaceous. Jeholodens jenkinsi and Sinosauropteryx prima

Pencil 1999

Plants are Cycads, small Blechnum-type ferns, clubmoss and Araucaria. Sinosauropteryx looks large in this one.

Published in Vasabladet 1999. Article written by Rolf Österblad. Jeholodens had just been described in Nature

Cretaceous Argentinosaurus huinculensis Abelisaurus comahuensis

Cretaceous. Argentinosaurus huinculensis , Abelisaurus comahuensis

Gouache 2001

At the time of making this painting not much was known about Argentinosaurus apart from it being huge and heavy. I based the head upon other South American sauropods.

Published in Vasabladet 2003. Article written by Rolf Österblad.
