This is the only fatal accident with a
Grumman aircraft in Finland.
It happened on August 16 2001 in the sea area south of Helsinki.
The owner/pilot had left his home base at Helsinki-Malmi airfield (EFHF)
for a cross country flight to Mariehamn (EFMA). The weather over the sea
area south of Helsinki become very bad and pilot made 180 degrees turn
and informed the tower that he is returning to the airport. According to
aye-wittnesses in a sailboat they saw the aircraft flying very low in
the
seafog. The wing hit the water and and the plane crashed and sunk killing
the pilot. Rescue helikopters arrived at the scene in about 10 minutes and
they reported that foggy clouds were an altitude of about 50 feet.
The accident got very mutch publicity in the media as it happened almoust
in the city of Helsinki
OH-AYU was also the only Cheetah that has been registered in Finland
